Recently we have received a number of questions about Scorpions, and more precisely Bark Scorpions. There is a tremendous amount of information available on the internet about scorpions, and some of it is absolutely brilliant, some of it is not worth lining the bird cage with… the trouble is how to tell the difference. Here are some facts and information you can take to the bank about Bark Scorpions:

  • Bark Scorpions are smallish and slender (in comparison to other scorpions) in size.
  • They are straw or light tan in appearance.
  • It’s sting is among the most venomous for it’s species. However few people die from a sting, unless they are very young, old or in generally poor health to begin with.
  • They are one of the few species of scorpion that can crawl up vertical surfaces. This is why we find them on the second story of homes from time to time.
  • They hunt crickets, cockroaches and other  insects, but will eat each other if forced.
  • They will fluoresce a greenish-yellow if exposed to a black light.
  • They are negatively geotactic…meaning they like to rest upside down on the underside of surfaces.  This is why people often get stung picking up objects.
  • They can fit into a crack 1/16”  wide.
  • They can go months without food or water.
  • Effective control is a combination of exclusion, habitat modification and selective chemical applications.
